Sonny Memorial Book

Bood Design

"Sonny" is a book about home and how the feeling of home can change due to the loss of a loved one. It is a portrait of loss and portrays how a person's presence or absence can affect a location's overall feeling. In April of 2015, my grandfather died, and he had lived with me my whole life. He was like a father to me, and when he passed, my home, which is my favorite place, felt much different, a little less warm, and a little less like home. I had to learn what my new home was like without him for the first time in my life. I remembered that my grandfather wrote down some of his police stories throughout his life, so I took excerpts from his writings, cards that were sent to him, and cards sent by him, to make up the pages in this book. Accompanying the handwritten text, I have included photographs I took, using a Holga camera, of all the houses my grandfather lived in as he was growing up, the old home that we all lived in, and our current home. I overlapped them with old pictures of my grandfather to produce double exposure effects, overall, displaying how my home has changed since my grandfather has died.
